SALAAMS ON OUR BELOVED PROPHET MUHAMMAD
Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wa Sallam

An Appreciation by Siddiq Osman Noormuhammad

SALAAM BY ALLAMAH SULAIMAN CHELEBI EFFENDI

This is the most popular salaam in the Turkish language. The munshid (reciter) recites the Mawlid u'n Nabi Sallallahu 'alaihi wa Sallam composed by al-'Allamah Sulaiman Chelebi Effendi Rahmatullahi 'alaih in a deep melodious voice. At the appropriate moment, when his birth is mentioned, all stand as in Mawlid u'n Nabi celebrations all over the world. While standing, the congregation rhythmically chants the following salaat after each verse:

Allahumma Salli 'alaa Sayyidina Muhammad-i ni'n Nabiyyi'l Ummiyyi
Wa 'alaa Aalihi wa Sahbihi wa Sallim.

O Allah bestow blessings and peace on Sayyidina Muhammad
The Prophet not taught by any human (but directly by You),
(O Allah send blessings and peace)
As well on his family and companions.

Sixteen verses in this mawlid eulogy welcome the Prophet Sallallahu 'alaihi wa Sallam at his birth with the joyous cry of Marhaba (Welcome or "Hail to thee!"). Seven of these verses are presented here to gain their flavour (translation is by E.J.W. Gibb in A History of Ottoman Poetry, Vol 1, pages 246-247).

Hail to thee! Unsetting Sun! All hail to thee!
Hail to thee! Unwaning moon! All hail to thee!

Hail to thee! O Parrot of the world's herbere!
Wildered for thy love doth every soul appear!

Hail to thee! O Secret of the Scripture! Hail!
Hail to thee! O Balm for every dolour! Hail!

Hail to thee! O Coolth o' th' eyne! O Intimate!
Hail to thee! O Most Beloved of God the Great!

Hail to thee! O Moon! O Sun most fair!
Hail to thee! who from the Lord are parted ne'er!

Hail to thee! of all the fond Desire art thou!
Hail to thee! to God most near and dear art thou!

Hail to thee! O thou of either world the King!
Yea, for thee this universe to life did spring!
