Sayyidina Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him)
Mother of faithful believers, Hadrat 'A' isha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: 'When Allah's Messenger (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) was seriously ill and Hadrat Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) came to announce the time of prayer for him, he said, "Order Abu Bakr to lead the people in the prayer." So Sayyidina Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) led the prayer during those days, then when the Prophet (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) experienced some improvement in his condition he got up and came into the mosque swaying between two men with his feet touching the ground. On hearing the sound Sayyidina Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) began to withdraw, but Allah's Messenger (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) signed to him not to do so. He then came and sat at Sayyidina Abu Bakr's (may Allah be pleased with him) left, and Sayyidina Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) prayed standing and Allah's Messenger (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) prayed sitting, Sayyidina Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) following Allah's Messenger's prayer, while the people followed Sayyidina Abu Bakr's (may Allah be pleased with him). (Bukhari and Muslim)
They both have a version which says that Sayyidina Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) caused the people to hear the takbir.
Hadrat Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reports from Ibni Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him):
"When Sayyidina Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) had expended all of his material possessions in the cause of Allah (The Glorified and the Exalted) and, wrapped in a torn shawl, was enjoying the company of the Holy Prophet (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him), Angel Jibril (peace be upon him) addressed the Messenger of Allah in these words:
"Surely Allah sends His salutations to Abu Bakr. Besides He commands me to ask him if he pleased or displeased with Him in his state of penury. At this Sayyidina Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) replied, "Can I be displeased with my Creator? O Messenger of Allah (tell him) I am pleased, I am pleased, I am pleased with my Lord." (Abu Yala)
Narrated Hadrat Abdullah Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him): "Allah's Messenger (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) in his fatal illness came out with a piece of cloth tied round his head and sat on the pulpit. After thanking and praising Allah (The Glorified and the Exalted) he said, "There is no one who had done more favour to me with life and property than Abu Bakr bin Abi Quhafa. If I were to take a Khalil, I would certainly have taken Abu Bakr but the Islamic brotherhood is superior. Close all the small doors in this mosque except that of Abu Bakr." (Bukhari)
Sayyidina Umar al-Faruq (may Allah be pleased with him)
Hadrat Abdallah Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I was standing among some people who made supplication to Allah (The Glorified and the Exalted) for Sayyidina 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) when he had been placed on his couch (before his passing away),* and a man behind me who had put his elbow on my shoulder was saying, "Allah have mercy one you! I hope Allah may place you along with your two companions, because I often heard Allah's Messenger (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) say, 'I, Abu Bakr and 'Umar were....', "I, Abu Bakr and 'Umar did....", "I, Abu Bakr and 'Umar went off....", "I, Abu Bakr and 'Umar entered....", "I, Abu Bakr and 'Umar went out...." Hadrat Abdullah Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said that when he turned round, he saw it was Sayyidina 'Ali bin Abu Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) (Bukhari and Muslim)
Sayyidina Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: 'I solicited leave of the Holy Prophet (May the blessings of Allah be with him) to perform the Umra.' He granted me leave and said: 'My Brother! Please remember me while praying.' Sayyidina Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: 'This is something which I would not exchange for the whole world.' (Abu Dawud and Tirmidhi)
Narrated Hadrat Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him): Sayyidina 'Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) asked permission of Allah's Messenger (May the blessings of Allah be with him) to see him while some Quraishi women were sitting with him, talking to him and asking him for more expenses, raising their voices over the voice of Allah's Messenger (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him). When Sayyidina 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the permission to enter, the women quickly put on their veils. Allah's Messenger (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) allowed him to enter and Sayyidina 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came in while Allah's Messenger (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) was smiling. Sayyidina 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "O Allah's Messenger! May Allah always keep you smiling." The Prophet (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) said, "These women who have been here, roused my wonder, for as soon as they heard your voice, they quickly put on their veils." Hadrat 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "O Allah's Messenger! You have more right to be feared by them than I." Then Sayyidina 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) addressed the women saying, "O enemies of yourselves! You fear me more than you do Allah's Messenger (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him)?" They said, "Yes, for you are harsher and sterner than Allah's Messenger (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him)." Then Allah's Messenger (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) said, "O, Ibn Al-Khattab! By Him in Whose Hands my life is! Never does Satan find you going on a way, but he takes a way other than yours." (Bukhari)
Sayyidina Uthman Dhun-Nurayn (may Allah be pleased with him)
Hadrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When Allah's Messenger (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) gave orders for the oath of allegiance of Allah's good pleasure*, Sayyidina Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) had gone to Makka as Rasulullah's envoy. Then when the people had taken the oath of allegiance, Allah's Messenger (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) said, "Uthman is engaged in Allah's business and in His Messenger's business." He then struck one of his hands on the other, and Allah's Messenger's (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) hand on behalf of Sayyidina 'Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) was better than the people's hands on their own behalf. (Tirmidhi)
* At Al-Hudaibiya, Qur'an (48:18)
Hadrat Abdul Rahman bin Khabab (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that when the Holy Prophet (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) invited the sahaba (companions) to spend in the cause of Allah (The Glorified and the Exalted) in order to strengthen the Islamic army, Sayyidina Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) purchased six hundred camels with all the necessary appurtenances and offered them to the Holy Prophet (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) as his contribution to the war effort. The Holy Prophet (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) was simply overjoyed to witness this unparalleled demonstration of practical charity. "I saw the Holy Prophet (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) came down the pulpit and said: after this, Uthman shall not be accountable for whatever he does." (Tirmidhi)
Mother of faithful believers, Hadrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Allah's Messenger (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) was lying in his house with (parts of) his legs uncovered when Sayyidina Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) asked permission to enter and he gave him permission while he was in that condition and he conversed. Sayyidina Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked permission to enter and he gave him permission while he was like that and he conversed. Then Sayyidina Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) asked permission to enter and Allah's Messenger (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) sat up and arranged his clothing. When he went out, Hadrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Hadrat Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) entered and you did not stir for him or worry about him, then Hadrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) entered and you did not stir for him or worry about him; then Hadrat Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) entered and you sat up and arranged your clothing." He replied, "shall I not be modest with one towards whom the angels are modest?" (Muslim)
Sayyidina Ali al-Murtada (may Allah be pleased with him)
Narrated Hadrat Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him): Allah's Messenger (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) set out for Tabuk, appointing Sayyidina Ali as his deputy (in Madina). Sayyidina 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Do you want to leave me with the children and women?" The Prophet (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) said, "Will you not be pleased that you will be to me like Aaron (peace be upon him) to Moses (peace be upon him)? But there will no Prophet after me.' (Bukhari)
Hadrat Abu Abbas Sahl ibn Sa'ad (may Allah be pleased with him) relates that before launching an attack on the day of the battle of Khaibar the Holy Prophet (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) declared: 'Tomorrow I shall hand over the standard to a person, through whom Allah will bestow victory upon us; and it is significant that such a person would be immensely loving Allah and His Messenger, and Allah and His Messenger would be loving him.' The people spent the night in suspense guessing and discussing as to who would get the distinction of receiving the standard. Next morning they went to the Holy Prophet (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) each expecting to get the honour. The Holy Prophet (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) enquired about Sayyidina Ali bin Abu Talib (may Allah be pleased with him). He was told that he had sore eyes. The Holy Prophet (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) asked the people to send for him. When he came, the Holy Prophet (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) put his saliva in his eyes and prayed for him. He was cured of his eyesore then and there as if he had never had any trouble at all. Then the Holy Prophet (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) handed over the standard to him. Sayyidina Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: 'Messenger of Allah, shall I fight them till they become Muslims like us?' The Holy Prophet (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) answered: 'Continue advancing with your normal speed till you reach their plain and encamp there. Then invite them to embrace Islam and appraise them of their obligations and duties to Allah. By Allah even if Allah guides a single person through you, that would be much better for you than a whole lot of red camels (a costly specie of camels). (Bukhari and Muslim)
Al-Bara bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) and Hadrat Zaib bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that when Allah's Messenger (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) alighted at the pool of Khumm,* he took Sayyidina Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) by the hand and asked those present, "Do you not know that I am closer to the believers than they themselves?", and they replied, "Certainly", "He then asked, "Do you not know that I am nearer to every believer than he himself?" and they replied, "Certainly." He then said, "O Allah, he whose patron I am, has 'Ali as his patron. O Allah be friendly to those who are friendly to him and hostile to those who are hostile to him." After that Hadrat 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) met him and said, "Congratulations, son of Abu Talib. Morning and evening you are the patron of every believing man and woman." (Ahmad)
