Rights and Obligations of Workers and Employers
Pay wages promptly
Hadrat ‘Abdallah bin ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reported Allah's Prophetic Messenger (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) as saying, "Give the worker his wages before his sweat dries." (Ibn Majah)
Be Considerate
Hadrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) reported Allah's Prophetic Messenger (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) as saying, "A slave is entitled to his food and clothing, and he should have imposed on him only such work as he is capable of doing." (Muslim)
Do not mistreat
Hadrat Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said that he heard Prophet Muhammad say, "If anyone beats a slave for an offence he did not commit, or slaps him, the atonement due from him is to set him free." (Muslim)
Abu Mas'ud al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When I was beating a slave of mine, I heard a voice behind me saying, "Know, Abu Mas'ud that Allah has more power over you than you have over him." On turning round and seeing that it was Allah's Prophetic Messenger (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him), I said, "Messenger of Allah, he is free for Allah's sake." He replied, "If you had not done it, the fire of Hell would have burned you," or, "the fire would have touched you." (Muslim)
The rights and obligations of workers
Narrated Hadrat Abu Musa Al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him): Allah's Prophetic Messenger (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) said, "He who has a slave-girl and educates and treats her nicely and then manumits and marries her, will get a double reward; and any slave who observes Allah's right and his master's right will get a double reward." (al-Bukhari)
Narrated Hadrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him): Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) said, "Goodness and comfort are for him who worships his Lord in a perfect manner and serves his master sincerely." (al-Bukhari)
The rights of the cook
Narrated Hadrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him): Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) said, "Your servant brings your meals to you, then if someone does not let him sit and share the meals, then he should at least give him a mouthful or two mouthfuls of that meal or a meal or two meals as he has prepared it." (al-Bukhari)
Your slaves are your brothers
Narrated Hadrat Al-Ma'rur (may Allah be pleased with him): At Ar-Rabadha, I met Hadrat Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) who was wearing a cloak, and his slave, too, was wearing a similar one. I asked about the reason for it. He replied, "I abused a person by calling his mother with bad names." Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) said to me, 'O Abu Dharr! Did you abuse him by calling his mother with bad names? You still have some characteristics of ignorance. Your slaves are your brothers and Allah has put them under your command. So whoever has a brother under his command should feed him of what he eats and dress him of what he wears. Do not ask them (slaves) to do things beyond their capacity and if you do so, then help them." (al-Bukhari)
The example of Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him)
Hadrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I served the Prophetic Messenger of Allah (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) for ten years and he never said to me "shame!" or "why did you do such and such?" or "why did you not do such and such?" (al-Bukhari and Muslim)
