Revelation of the Qur'an (Wahy)
The First Wahy(Revelation)
Narrated mother of faithful believers, Hadrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), the wife of the Prophet (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him): The commencement (of the Divine Inspiration) to Allah's Messenger (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) was in the form of true dreams in his sleep, for he never had a dream but it turned out to be true and clear as the bright daylight. Then he beagn to like seclusions, so he used to go in seclusion in the cave of Hira where he used to worship Allah (The Glorified and the Exalted) for many nights before going back to his family to take the necessary provision (of food) for the stay. He would come back to (his wife) mother of faithful believers, Hadrat Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) again to take his provision (of food) likewise, till one day he recieved the Guidance while he was in the cave of Hira. An Angel came to him and asked him to read. Allah's Messenger (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) replied, "I do not know how to read." The Prophet (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) added, "Then the Angel held me (forcibly) and pressed me so hard that I felt distressed. Then he released me and again asked me to read, and I replied, 'I do not know how to read.' Thereupon, he held me again and pressed me for the second time till I felt distressed. He then released me and asked me to read again, but again I replied 'I do not know how to read'. Thereupon he held me for the third time and pressed me till I got distressed, then he released me again and said,
'Read, in the Name of your Lord Who has created (all that exists), has created man out of a clot. Read! And your Lord is Most Generous. Who has taught (the writing) by the pen, has taught man that which he knew not." (96:1-5)
Then Allah's Messenger (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) returned with that experience; and the muscles between his neck and shoulders were trembling till he came upon Hadrat Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) (his wife) and said, "Cover me!" They covered him, and when the state of fear was over, he said to Hadrat Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her): "O Khadijah, What is wrong with me? I was afraid that something bad might happen to me." Then he told her the story. Hadrat Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) said, "Nay! But recive the good tidings! By Allah, Allah (The Glorified and the Exalted) will never disgrace you, for by Allah, you keep good relations with your kith and kin, speak the truth, help the poor and the destitute, entertain your guests generously and assist those who are stricken with calamities."
Hadrat Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) then took him to Waraqa bin Naufil, the son of Hadrat Khadijah's paternal uncle. Waraqa had been converted to Christianity in the Pre-Islamic Period and used to write Arabic and write of the Gospel in Arabic as much as Allah (The Glorified and the Exalted) wished him to write. He was an old man and had lost his eyesight. Hadrat Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) said (to Waraqa), "O my cousin! Listen to what your nephew is going to say." Waraqa said, "O my nephew! What have you seen?"
The Prophet (May the blessings of Allah be with him) then described whatever he had seen. Waraqa said, "This is the same Angel (Gabriel) who was sent to Moses (peace be upon him). I wish I were young. " He added some other statement. Allah's Messenger (May the blessings of Allah be with him) asked, "Will these people drive me out?" Waraqa said, "Yes, for nobody brought the like of what you have brought, but was treated with hostility. If I were to remain alive till your day (when you start preaching) then I would support you strongly. " But a short while later Waraqa died and the Divine Inspiration was paused (stopped) for a while so that Allah's Messenger (May the blessings of Allah be with him) was very much grieved.
Narrated Hadrat Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him): While Allah's Messenger (May the blessings of Allah be with him) was talking about the period of pause in revelation he said in his narration. "Once while I was walking, all of a sudden I heard a voice from the sky. I looked up and saw to my surprise, the same angel that had visited me in the cave of Hira. He was sitting on a chair between the sky and the earth. I got afraid of him and came back home and said, "Cover me up! Cover me up!" So they covered him and then Allah (The Glorified and the Exalted) revealed:-
'O you wrapped up! Arise and warn and your Lord magnify, and your garments purify and pollution shun' (74:1-5)
Abu Salama said, "(Rijz) are the idols which the people of the Pre-Islamic period used to worship." After this the revelation started coming frequently and regularly. (al-Bukhari)
The Prophet (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) calls people to Islam Narrated Hadrat Ibn' Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him): When the Verse:- 'And warn your tribe of near-kindered, ' was revealed, the Prophet (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) ascended the Safa (mountain) and started calling, "O Bani Fihr! O Bani 'Adi!" addressing various tribes of Quraish till they were assembled. Those who could not come themselves, sent their Messengers to see what was there. Abu Lahab and other people from Quraish came and the Prophet (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) then said, " Suppose I told you that there is an (enemy) cavalry in the valley intending to attack you, would you believe me?" They said, " Yes, for we have not found you telling anything other than the truth." He then said, " I am a warner to you in face of a terrific punishment." Abu Lahab said (to the Prophet, May the blessings of Allah be with him)." May your hands perish all this day. Is it for this purpose you have gathered us?" Then it was revealed:-
'Perish the hands of Abu Lahab and perish he! His wealth and what he earns will not profit him...'(111:1-5) (al-Bukhari)
The end of Revelation
Hadrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him). relates that after the passing away of the Holy Prophet (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him), Sayyidina Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him.) said to Sayyidina Umar (may Allah be pleased with him.): 'Let us visit Umm Aiman (may Allah be pleased with her.) as the Holy Prophet (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) used to. 'Accordingly when we came to her, she started weeping.' They asked her; 'What makes you weep? Do you not know that Allah (The Glorified and the Exalted) has better recompense for the Holy Prophet (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) than what he had in this world?" She said: 'I know this well that what Allah (The Glorified and the Exalted) has for the Holy Prophet (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) with Him is the best recompense. I do not weep for this. I shed tears because Revelation has now stopped'. This moved the two distinguished persons so much so that they too started weeping along with her. (Muslim)
